Etiquette Tip of the Month - Reply by... Dates
by Cynthia Grosso
|
Has this ever happened to you?
You are hosting a corporate event of considerable expense and sent out invitations with a "Please reply by..." date on them. However, that date has passed and many people still have not replied. How do you handle this?
Unfortunately a “reply by” date on an invitation is often ignored, which can be frustrating for the host - as well as impolite. If you sent an invitation and not received a reply by the date requested, it is acceptable for you or your assistant to call the recipient to make sure they received it.
Although easy to overlook, we need to pay attention to this small but considerate act of social and professional courtesy. |

Etiquette Tip of the Month - Honorifics
by Cynthia Grosso
| A common etiquette mistake I see when addressing thank-you notes, invitations, Holiday cards and even business letters is the address on the outside of the envelope. The envelope may read John Smith on the first line followed by the address. However, this is not correct. Do you know why?
You are correct if your answer was that the honorific was left off. Honorifics are Mr., Mrs., Miss and Ms. So the correct way to address the envelope would be: Mr. John Smith. Always use the honorific when addressing an envelope.

Etiquette Tip of the Month
by Cynthia Grosso
|
A very common dilemma I hear about is that people do not reply to invitations. This is considered impolite and often causes great stress to the host. The reply request information is an important part of the invite. It is located on the bottom left of the invitation and typically called the R.S.V.P.....French for “Respondez s’il vous plait”, it translates to “please reply”.
Try to make it as easy as possible for a guest to reply. When using a telephone number, be sure to put the person’s name to whom you are responding. This is often left out of the information. And remember, when receiving an invitation, you should send your reply within one week of receipt. |
